I just saw Men Who Stare At Goats. It was awesome, even though the TOTAL WIENER* at Entertainment Weekly gave it an F for supposedly being smug**. Don't listen to him. If you like freedom and hate Kevin Spacey, you will halfway like this movie, because it is fun (like freedom), but Kevin Spacey doesn't get eaten by goats (the only really disappointing part tbh), and George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, and Jeff Bridges are charming the whole way through. It helps if you vaguely know how the military works to get some of the jokes, which are more "chuckle lightly and then stop abruptly when you realize that nobody in the theater is laughing, oh god so embarrassing***" than "guffaw loudly." Most of the movie is amusing with no background knowledge, though, so that's awesome.

Um! What else. Oh, I want to make a huge post about Scientology and how it ruins lives (if this seems petty and irrelevant, whatever, I'm a petty and irrelevant person. Scientology is not just for Hollywood crazies, and the moon base in Clearwater has a shadow that stretches for miles around), and I will do that probably soon. Becoming a full-on recognized suppressive person is one of my most petty and irrelevant goals in life. I have a five-pronged plan! Bring on the Fair Game battle tactics, dudes! I will see your lawsuits and raise you punching David Miscavige until he cries! Which is apparently what he does to his own employees!

(If anybody wants to argue freedom of religion w/r/t Scientology, I would like to remind you that calling it a cult is both unfair to cults and wholly inaccurate. At best, it's a pyramid scheme targeting both the rich and stupid (which is fine) and the poor and vulnerable (which is not). At worst, people fucking die.)

*Owen Gleiberman, though Lisa Schwarzbaum is also a wiener. Man, I hate people who hate fun. And people who hate fun who apparently get paid to review movies. Why is it that they're the ones who get to work this kind of awesome job? One of life's great ironies.

**Most movies about war that were filmed after 2003 are fucking smug in some degree, bro. This is one of the more endearing ones. Get over yourself, being smugly aware that a movie is smug doesn't make you cool. It makes you also smug.

***MARTIAL BUREAUCRACY/ARMY DOUBLESPEAK IS FUNNY, OKAY.

Well this has been a long time coming, hasn’t it? I’m so unbelievably busy right now, but I’m foregoing studying tonight, so that I can update. There’s a month until my exams and I’m stressed out already! (Gibbering insanely in the corner, sobsob).

NEXT CHAPTER HERE )

Thanks for reading. Please leave a review. ALSO: my computer went weird, and kept adding doubles of some letters… for example, “Hhaarry wentt to the sshop”. I tried to catch them all, but if I missed some then I am sorry.

Not including the Quidditch matches, nothing else interesting happens in canon until April! Wow, so I’ll probably have another time jump chapter after next then.

I missed your skin when you were east.

Why hello there, flist! It's been a while. I think I may actually find back to my regular spammage of your flist soon, so be prepared for that. Maybe not today because I'm sad and I miss my girl, but tomorrow maybe. So what's been going on with all of you? HAS THE NEW MCR ALBUM BEEN RELEASED YET?

I'll leave you with the important knowledge that it is canon that Jeph actually tells Dan he loves him every day and this picture courtesy of Mr. Dallon Weekes:

Anyone my age and older knows these by heart. I asked the twins, who are 15, if they knew them and they didn't. I'll have to ask D1, she's 19.

"The Big Snit"

Hilarious stuff. When this first came out, for years afterwards we'd shout, "Shakin' yur eyes here! Shakin' yur eyes there! Why don't you go join...some...shaka-rockin-roll band!"

"The Log Driver's Waltz"
This little short was on TV all the time when I was little. I can sing it word for word.

"Faces"

Another short that played all the time when I was young. The final two faces always depressed me. Thanks guys. Thanks for the metaphor or whatever omg.

ETA: Stupid embedding. Damn you to hell.

yuletide!

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 12:33 PM
Dear [info]yuletide author,

What up! This is my first year doing yuletide, and I'm super excited. I've gotten excited about postings and reveals every year, but my involvement has been always limited to reading and enjoying everyone's suffering the last two weeks before the deadline!

But you should probably not suffer! If you are not already on my flist, then you should know that I am unspeakably easy when it comes to fic. There's not much that will keep me from enjoying a fic, especially since spending a year in bandom where my no list was "sad death". Note that happy death is totally fine.

In general, here are somethings that make me cross the line from enjoying to adoring: really dumb jokes, inept dudes holding babies (self-birthed or otherwise), fond mocking of main characters, parodies, fairytale aus, devirginizing, arranged marriages, obliviousness, sex against walls, girls being great, aliens made us do it, dreams, pretty much any premise that you go "no one is going to roll with this". I promise you, I will.

My dislike list is ridiculously short: Angst that doesn't get resolved. Vampire!fic. Magical genderswap (although I'm totally fine with always-a-girl). Character bashing that is serious, not hilarious. PRETTY MUCH THAT IS IT. I am not a real big BDSM girl, but I think that ties into not being a really big pwp girl? But I seriously am typing this and thinking of two stories that are exceptions to that statement. All of this is optional, seriously. I can't imagine disliking whatever you put out, unless everyone dies at the end. Then you will pay.

Uh, I guess the bottom line of this entire letter is WAY TO GO YOU, I'M THE YULETIDE ASSIGNMENT EQUIVALENT OF A COMM CLASS AT A NO GRADES COLLEGE.

Three years ago today, my best friend, someone that I still don't know how I'm living without, passed away from complications due to leukemia.

She was everything vital and amazing and alive. Today I noticed that her photobuckets had gone inactive so images weren't showing up on her lj or myspace, so I went and signed into them to get them back up and running.

I also composed a little Amelia picspam since I was looking at her pictures anyway. I encourage you to go check out her photobuckets. She was a great photographer and, if she didn't end up traveling the world digging up early hominids as she planned, I'd like to think she's be traveling the world taking pictures of rock bands and nature.

These pictures, however, are all of her )
