Okay, this whole warnings wank is making me queasy. I am kind of appalled that people are even arguing about putting up warnings, what the actual fuck?! I don't see any good reason not to put up a simple warning to save people serious hurt when the readers have expressly stated that they were indeed triggered by the content of your fic. The idea that it is "spoilery" or ruins the artistic integrity of your fic is pretty stupid, because most authors have no problem revealing the pairing(s) in their header, which, let's face it, pretty much tells you more than a warning for dub-con does. Is the idea of shocking your readers with some surprise non-con really worth some of them reliving excruciating and traumatic experiences? And no, just because published novelists don't do it, that doesn't mean that you are not being a dickwad by ignoring the people asking you to help them avoid getting hurt.
The attitude that goes roughly "I'm not responsible for your emotional wellbeing, grow up and be stronger!" sickens me. It's offensive and disturbing, not to mention rude to most people who aren't in fact emotionally stunted. I can't even believe people are going around comparing squicks to triggering, it is so ignorant and insensitive I don't even know how these people don't implode with their own self-importance. Newsflash: not everything is about you, and please don't be a dick! I don't understand the idea that if you have a traumatic past you should get the fuck out of fandom until you're "over it" just because some people don't feel like putting up a warning, seriously, what the actual fuck? Fandom and fanfiction is a great thing, and a big part of its value lies in the fact that anyone can participate. That's what makes it wonderful, that's why I'm here. It's easily accessed entertainment that you can be a part of, and I get that writers might not want to think about serious issues, I do. This is your happy place, and you don't want to take it too seriously. But just, stay with me here, do the victims of sexual assault or violence not deserve the same thing? Do they not deserve to have fandom as their easy entertainment, devoid of seriousness and anguish? If they happen upon a fic that sounds like fun, don't they deserve to know in advance that their entertainment is going to turn into something else entirely for them? Just. Put up a fucking warning, seriously. Please. Let's all hold hands and not be shitheads together.
For anyone who is still unclear about what triggers really are and why you should really really really warn for things that are pretty common triggers, please read this post by
impertinence. Warning: Very explicit discussion of sexual assault and the nature, anatomy, cause & effect of triggers. Is itself triggery.
See, that wasn't so hard, was it?

also, you know what? using certain things just for their sheer shock value (especially rape or sexual assault) is not good, it's lazy writing. i have a longer rant on this but i can't do it right now. but you know what i mean. and adding a warning is not hard, dammit.
It really is! Not to mention kind of disgusting, and dumb, and ugh. FUCK EVERYONE.
INDEED. though it is heartening to see the number of people who have made their own posts, admitted to being wrong before, and made coherent and awesome arguments on the right side. it's like there's hope for humanity or something.
you okay, honey? just, i get a little worried and such. *hugs*
Awww, you are so amazing! ♥ I am totally fine, though! I am just a little wound up because ugh, looking for a job is haaaard and I almost got an interview, but the lady who called me was a little worried that I was too far away (pah, it's just an hour! whatever, lady, it takes me an hour to get anywhere!) so now I just don't have a clue what will happen! Fuck you weekend :| ALSO HOW ARE YOUUUUUUU? STILL SICK? I MAY NEED TO COME OVER AND SNUGGLE AND EAT COOKIES AND WATCH DAYTIME TV! *worried face*
OH AND ALSO ILUUUUUUU
uuuugh, i hate not knowing. Waiting SUCKS. If you do get an interview (*holding my thumb for yooou, because you're swedish too*) lemme know if you want tips--I'm not great at getting interviews, but I've gotten every job I've interviewed for since I came back to Sweden. At this point, that's like, five jobs? Or something?
I am feeling better! But I'll take the snuggles and cookies and such anyways. :D My throat still hurts and I'm a bit achy, but no more fever and I feel clear-headed, which thank GOD. hate being sick when it's hot out.
*glomps* ILU TOOOOO
Ooooooh, reaaaaaaaally? (ahaha, how much are you gonna regret this! iluuuu) Even if I don't get an interview for this job it's always good to be prepared! LIKE A JOB SEEKER CONDOM, HAHA WAT IDK. It'd be awesome to get some pointers from someone who hasn't
had the same job for 25+ years (parents, I am looking at you D:)!
Yay, I'm glad you're feeling better! You should get some ice cream just in case! :D
*tacklesnuggle* ILU SO RIDICULOUSLYYYYY <333
OF COURSE. Ask me questions and such. It'll be useful even if you go to Sweden, because interviews happen here too. And man, there ARE jobs, even if there's a crisis and stuff. Promise.
Now I can't eat ice cream because my stomach is being stupid. D: But Stockholm is pretty and I'm wearing lots of pretty dresses and such, so.
I LOVE YOU. SORRY ABOUT THE LATE REPLY, JESUS.
SCOTT, I AM SO ANGRY! COME LOOK AT MY TINY FISTS OF FURY!
